Styling accessories: one detail changes everything

MAKE Journal · Sample article · About 3 minutes to read

Sometimes the outfit is already there: well-fitting trousers, a simple top and a jacket. What it needs is not a new wardrobe, but one considered accent. Accessories can connect colours, highlight proportions or introduce something unexpected into a quiet look.

Choose a focal point

A burgundy bag, a patterned scarf or a distinctive belt: begin by deciding which detail you want to notice first. Let the others take a supporting role. This does not have to make the look minimalist, but it can make it feel more coherent. If you enjoy several accents, connect them through a shared colour or shape.

One scarf, several possibilities

Loosely around your neck, as a small accent on a bag or open across your shoulders: a scarf changes character with the way you wear it. Try different folds in front of the mirror. Take care that knots and attachments do not put unnecessary pressure on delicate fabric or bag handles.

Shoes change the mood

Wide trousers with loafers feel different from the same trousers with simple trainers. The most striking shoe is not always the most interesting choice. Sometimes a small change in the relationship between the hem and the shoe is enough to balance an outfit. Walk around and check that the length works in everyday movement.

Start with what you have

Place three accessories beside a familiar outfit and swap them one at a time. Photograph each version. A forgotten scarf may suddenly feel fresh, or a bag may connect two colours you previously wore separately. New combinations often come from experimenting rather than shopping.

Our favourite question: Which detail makes this outfit yours? There is no universal answer. Choose something you enjoy and give it room to stand out. An accessory does not need to be new, expensive or dramatic to become the most personal part of a look.
